Downtown Kona offers a variety of shopping and dining opportunities, from the waterfront venues along the popular Ali’i Drive to hidden cafes waiting to be discovered. This downtown area offers a unique blend of historic sites, shops, restaurants, and a bustling waterfront that even includes swimmable beaches. Kamakahonu Beach, also known as King Kam Beach, is located right along the Kailua Pier and is a great downtown spot for an early morning snorkeling or stand-up paddleboarding session. On the other side of the pier is Kaiakeakua Beach, the site of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship, held yearly in October. Dolphins can often be spotted throughout the morning in the bay.
Alongside world-class beaches, you’ll also find opportunities to dig into the culture and history of Hawaii. Kona was the location of choice for vacationing Hawaiian royalty in the days of the monarchy, evidenced by the Hulihe‘e Palace which today serves as a museum of life in Hawaii in the 1800s.
When hunger strikes, take a stroll down Ali’i Drive, which hugs the ocean on one side while offering a wide array of shops and restaurants along with the other. Huggo’s is a staple waterfront eatery for feasting on fresh seafood or steak, sipping a glass of wine, and catching a spectacular sunset over the ocean. If you’d prefer to pick up ingredients to enjoy a meal within the privacy of your Kona vacation rental, consider shopping local at the Kona Farmer’s Market. Open Wednesdays through Sundays, you’ll find a variety of fresh produce, coffee, and gourmet food items, as well as products such as jewelry and clothing.
An array of shopping options is available throughout Kona, from shopping centers with mainstream stores to local vendors offering unique products. Pick up anything from a ukulele to the latest style of sunglasses as you browse Kona’s best shopping venues.
Coffee lovers will be delighted to discover that there are about a dozen coffee farms just in the Kona region alone, not to mention the additional farms located in the Ka’u and Hilo areas. Thanks to the rich volcanic soil and high elevation in Kona’s upland slopes, the conditions are perfect for coffee farms, so visitors can explore the entire coffee production process from seed to cup. The Kona Coffee Living History Farm offers the unique experience of seeing how coffee production on the Big Island has changed over the years. Costumed interpreters bring the experience to life, making it interesting for children as well as adults. If you’d rather just taste test your way through Kona’s many working coffee farms, you’ll have plenty of options for doing so. Many of Kona’s coffee farms offer tours and tastings, so you can enjoy a good cup of joe onsite and pick some up to bring back to your Kona vacation rental as well. Some farms such as Rooster Farms and Sunshower Coffee Farm even offer a hands-on roasting lesson so you can roast your own coffee to bring home.
Nearby Big Island Activities
There is much to see and do within the heart of Kona and the immediate surrounding area. And if you want to venture further afield, popular day trips such as the scenic Saddle Road, Mauna Kea, coffee plantations, and the scenic beaches further up the western coast are all accessible from Kona.
Visit the Highest Point in Hawaii
Spend the morning soaking up the sun along the shoreline and the afternoon standing on the peak of the state of Hawaii’s highest point, easily accessible from Kona. In fact, it takes under 1.5 hours to reach the Mauna Kea Visitor Center from Kona, making it an easy day trip. At over 4,200 meters above sea level, this dormant volcano is the highest point in Hawaii. It is so high, in fact, that its peak can see snow during winter months, offering the unique opportunity to splash and play in the warm Pacific in the morning and throw snowballs just a couple of hours later. Due to its altitude and lack of light pollution, Mauna Kea is known for its excellent stargazing opportunities.
Explore Multi-Colored Beaches
From silky white sand beaches to exotic black sand beaches that stand in stark contrast to the aqua sea, the Big Island’s beaches have their own personalities and even their own hues. The best white sand beaches on the Big Island lie along the island’s western coast within easy reach from Kona. But if you’re interested in seeing some of its other exotic beaches, consider setting aside a day to beach hop your way among stretches of shoreline that are drastically different. Punalu’u Beach is perhaps the Big Island’s most striking black sand beach and is located along the island’s southern tip within a 90-minute drive from Kona. The black sand here is made from basalt and creates a stunning backdrop against the thick grove of palm trees that line the beach. You’re also likely to spot green sea turtles resting along the shore at Punalu’u. Papakōlea Beach is located in the same area, making it also about a 90-minute drive from Kona. This green sand beach gets its hue from the green olivine crystals that are washed out of the old cinder cone near the beach. This beach is more difficult to reach than Punalu’u Beach, requiring a 5-mile round trip hike. But those who choose to make the effort will be rewarded with a unique beach setting that can be experienced in few other places!
Whether you’re snorkeling alongside friends in the heart of Kona or enjoying a romantic evening of stargazing with a loved one, there are so many ways to enjoy the island from your 4-bedroom rental in Kona!
